Our History: A Legacy of Innovation
When Lawrence "Cal" Callahan opened Callahan's Carpet House, Inc. on South Water Street in Kent, Ohio in March, 1960, he was the first independent carpeting retailer in Portage County. With the invention of tufted carpet, home owners were drawn to the new concept of 'wall to wall carpeting', which became significantly more affordable in the sixties. Providing exceptional service at fair prices, Cal outlasted even the big box stores of the time (Polsky’s & O’Neil’s) and his original 600 square foot store grew to encompass a 10,000 square foot showroom, with offices and a warehouse. No longer just a carpet store, the latest hard surface products continued to be introduced every year.
Cal's son, Jim, assumed leadership of the business in 1984 and after enjoying a long-term relationship with the families and businesses of Hudson, Jim and his son Larry opened a showroom in Hudson in the fall of 2002. By 2008, it was time to update the showroom, so Larry moved the original Hudson showroom just a bit north on Darrow Road into its current location at Orchard Plaza. In 2010, Jim retired and the original Kent location was sold. The Hudson showroom is much better suited for customers to appreciate the design and aesthetic of new flooring for their homes.
